We are very honoured to welcome Lakshmish Bhat, our chanting and philosophy teacher from Mysore, India, to Ashtanga Yoga Malmö. Together with Astanga Yoga Copenhagen, Yogashala Stockholm and Nico Cooper /Tullia Jack Ashtanga Yoga, we host Lakshmish during his visit to northern Europe. In Malmö he will teach a workshop of three classes between 13-15 April 2023 including chanting, lectures and traditional Puja, ceremony. This is a unique opportunity to meet a genuine Indian scholar teaching directly from the source of Indian yoga philosophy.

Lakshmish is the teacher of Sanskrit, Chanting and Yoga philosophy at the Sharath Yoga Center (SYC) in Mysore where he also conducts daily traditional Brahmin pooja rituals. He was born in 1978 into a Brahmin family in the small village Madgeri, nearby Gokarna (Shivas holy place) in the north of Karnataka, India. He studied Sanskrit by the traditional method in his village and in the year 2000 he came to the Mysore Maharaja Sanskrit College for further studies of Advaita Vedanta. Lakshmish further obtained the Vidwan title in the named subject and subsequently received a master’s degree from Mysore University in 2006. In 2006 he married Ranjita. Together they have a son, Gautama who is now 10 years old.

 

PROGRAMME:

Thursday April 13 at 5pm – 7pm

  • Chanting of the Shanti Mantras and the Ashtanga Yoga Mantra.
  • Introduction to the philosophy of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Yoga Sutra according to the Indian tradition.

Friday April 14 at 5pm – 8pm

  • Lakshmish’s history, family tradition, Vedic studies in Mysore and connection to the Jois’ family
  • Basic chanting and explanation of the meaning of mantra, plus the history of the Ashtanga Yoga mantra.
  • Puja, traditional Brahmin ceremony

Saturday April 15 at 12pm-3pm

  • Chanting of the Shanti Mantras, the Ashtanga Yoga Mantra, asana names and Sanskrit numbers.
  • Introduction to the philosophy of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Yoga Sutra according to the Indian tradition.
